Foundation in Screen Practice (30)
This module will introduce you to CFS filmmaking equipment through technical induction sessions, workshops and supervised studio practice.
Your understanding of the equipment will be applied to the making of a short film where you will also learn about the basic production management paperwork required when producing a film project.
Screen Industries Research (15)
This module will familiarise you with study skills and research methodologies that develop your ability to search for, locate, extract, organise, evaluate, use, present and retain relevant information appropriate to their study.
This module will introduce you to dramaturgy, narrative structure and character development through lectures, seminars and practical exercises. You will be introduced to different genres and explore these through the analysis of short films.
This module will introduce you to the practical film production processes, including the production stages, elements and organisational requirements.
For your final projects, the filmmakers will choose a screenwriting project and develop that into a short film on which all of you will collaborate fulfilling the production roles.
Visual Storytelling
In this module you will engage with moving image as a specifically visual medium; drawing on traditions of art, photography and theatre. This module will foreground the importance of narrative sequence, with emphasis on framing, staging, and syntagmatic storytelling.
Screen Studies
This module focuses on the study of films from multiple perspectives, including thematic, narrative structure, genre, ideology, and the relationship between style and technology. A number of critical responses to cinema – including genre study, auteur theory, and feminist critiques, will also be applied to featured titles both fiction and documentary.
Shooting for Post Production
This module explores technical and creative aspects of shooting footage with post-production in mind, covering camera settings, codecs, on-set data management, and shooting techniques for VFX. Students will engage in practical exercises to refine their skills in planning and executing shoots that align with post-production needs.
VFX Fundamentals
This will cover compositing, motion tracking, green screen keying, rotoscoping, and digital effects integration. Students will learn how to create seamless VFX that enhance storytelling and apply industry-standard techniques to their projects.
2D Effects and Practices
Students will explore motion graphics, keyframing, typography in motion, and 2D animation techniques. They will gain hands-on experience designing transitions, overlays, and animated elements for integration with live-action footage.
Finishing for Film and Broadcast
This module covers colour grading, shot matching, advanced correction techniques, and audio post-production. Students will learn to prepare deliverables for cinema, streaming platforms, and broadcast, working across the various Heads of Departments, roles and teams to ensure industry-standard quality.
Collaborative Workflows
This module focuses on collaborative editing, asset management, version control, and both local and remote teamwork. Students will practice real-world post-production workflows, ensuring smooth communication and seamless project execution. The module offers students opportunities to work in teams to develop techniques and creative practices that expand and broaden their skills in building and designing media workflows within the context of an industry/professional brief. The module also offers the opportunity to attend to the workplace practices that enhance working with diverse and geographically dispersed teams.
The Professional Post-Producer
This is a module that helps you get ready for entering the industry, from applying for jobs, CV writing, showreel editing, creating an on-line presence for yourself, and going through the process of a mock interview. Students will learn about budgeting, scheduling, client relations, ethical considerations, and career development. The module includes strategies for building a portfolio, networking, and pitching post-production services.
Final Major Project
This dissertation-level project allows students to build on the technical process skills and subject knowledge developed at Level Four and Five. Students will conceptualize, plan, and execute a major project that demonstrates their proficiency in post-production and VFX. This will include any aspect of the skills developed over the course of their studies, including editing, sound design, colour grading, 2D/3D animation and VFX, culminating in a polished final piece for public presentation.
