Sir Ronald thinks through his answer to a student question

Oscar winner teaches at Central!

Students at Central Film School London were delighted to receive a masterclass in screenwriting from one of the world's most respected screenwriters, Sir Ronald Harwood.

Sir Ronald has received 3 Oscar nominations and won his Oscar in 2003 for 'The Pianist' starring Adrian Brody and directed by Roman Polanski. Sir Ronald was then nominated again five years later for the utterly superb film 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly', which remains the only Oscar nominated script ever not to have had a single word changed from the first draft!

Sir Ronald took time out of his busy schedule, where he is currently adapting one of his own stage plays, 'Quartet', to the screen for Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut. As a screenwriter, Sir Ronald has collaborated twice with Roman Polanski in the last decade, in addition to other major feature directors, including Baz Luhrmann,              Mike Newell, Julian Schnabel and Mike Figgis.

Students at the school made the most of the opportunity to fire their questions at Sir Ronald about screenwriting, adaptations, working in Hollywood and, of course, what it feels like to win an Oscar.

"It was a great class, I am just glad to have been there!'
Parv Bancil, Industry Filmmaking Diploma student

"Brilliant! I am totally inspired. He is great at focusing on content over form - and what an amazing speaker!"
Laura Swain - Applied Screenwriting Diploma graduate

"I just loved the fact that Sir Ronald has worked so hard all his career to get where he is now, and more than that,  he still continues to work so hard at 76 years of age!".

Katie Hodgkin, Industry Filmmaking Diploma student

As usual, the Q&A session was hosted by School Director, Ashley Musgrave, who afterwards commented:

"I invited Sir Ronald to the school knowing that the students would benefit greatly from his wisdom, his advice and his experience. I must say that I left the session as inspired as anyone in the room - he really is someone that everyone can learn from!"
